World Class Competition Law Boutique Consultancy
About The Founder
Lulama has 20 years experience specialising in Competition Law. Her training ground was at the Competition Commission of South Africa where she worked in the Legal Services Division. This position exposed her to all aspects of the Commission’s work and across the length and breadth of Competition Law regulation early in her career.
She was later head hunted by the law firm, Bowman Gilfillan Inc., and was based in its Sandton office. At Bowmans, she started as an associate, in less than six months was promoted to the position of senior associate and became a partner in March 2007. It was at Bowmans where she gained an in depth and broad experience in advising private and public clients. She was also involved in other aspects of law firm management such as recruitments of both junior and senior professionals as well as in the management of the firm. She was at Bowmans for 10 years, 7 years of which as a partner and 5 years of which serving as a member of the firm’s Executive Committee.
In 2014, Lulama founded Lulama Mtanga Legal Consultancy, a boutique consultancy specialising in Competition Law.
She was approached by the South African Competition Tribunal to assist it with its caseload from 1 September – 31 December 2016.
In 2015, Lulama was approached by the Competition Commission to serve as a panelist in the Grocery Retail Market Inquiry, a role she commenced on from 2016 until 25 November 2019, when the Inquiry completed its work. She also chaired some of the Inquiry’s hearings.
Lulama serves as an independent non-executive director on the boards of three private companies, which include a listed company and in which she also serves as the chairperson of its Social & Ethics Committee. She also serves as a member of the Audit Committees in all three companies.
Whilst having a good understanding of the approach from the regulator’s perspective, her knowledge and experience enables her to provide clients with legal solutions that are business and commercially sound.
Lulama conducts her work with passion and the highest level of professionalism.

Testimonials
Lulama has been described by many as a great mentor. Some of the epic descriptions of Lulama include:
"She runs a world class competition law boutique practice."
"Lulama’s reputation as an expert in her chosen field precedes her. Her depth of experience and knowledge of Competition and Anti-trust law has seen our organization through trying experiences and periods with authorities. A proactive approach and open mindedness makes her a valuable resource to us as an organization. I highly recommend her to any global and local organization that has to navigate the minefield that is Competition Law."
"I know very few people who have such a passion for competition law and who go beyond normal requirements to ensure positive outcomes for their clients. Lulama is one of handful lawyers who have worked directly for the competition authorities, had a successful practice in a big law firm in South Africa and managed to transition her career by establishing her own consulting firm where she advises clients across sectors. She has strong relationships with competition authorities across Africa and was appointed a panel member of the South African Competition Commission’s Inquiry into the grocery retail sector. She is one of very few women of colour who are internationally ranked as competition law experts in South Africa."
